One of the key issues raised by what happened to Madeleine McCann was the question of whether it was right or wrong to leave three children all under the age of four on their own, whether for three hours, half an hour, or five minutes.
The guidance from the National Society from the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) is very clear; NEVER LEAVE YOUNG CHILDREN ON THIER OWN. There are many other child welfare organisations. They all say exactly the same.
Let`s think about what could happen to a child left alone in the evening just for a few minutes, with the parents eating out over a hundred yard away. All of the following are possible;
* Fire could break out
* The child could wake up and be frightened and need comforting
* The child could be sick with the possibility of chocking on his own vomit
* The child could fall and hurt himself
* The child could confuse a pill for a sweet
* The child could play with a plug or other electrical items
That`s why we feel that a fitting way to remember Madeleine, whether she was abducted, or something else happened, would be to tighten up the law so that all parents would be left in no doubt whatsoever that you should never leave young children on thier own.
As we develop our website, we will explain in detail the current law and practice on child welfare cases, and how the law should be changed to safeguard and promote the welfare of vunerable young children.
